Koinobori are Japanese carp streamers, or windsocks, that are hung outside homes and schools to celebrate Children's Day on May 5th. Traditionally, a set is flown with the largest black streamer representing the father, a slightly smaller red one for the mother, and smaller, differently colored streamers for the children, symbolizing a wish for them to be strong and healthy. The carp is a symbol of strength, courage, and perseverance, with a size and color variety available to represent different family members.
